These days, the term "chill out music" is so widely used that few people actually remember the contribution of The Orb, an English electronic music group, to popularizing chill out music in the 1990s and spawning the genre of ambient house.

Founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty, The Orb began as ambient and dub DJs in London. Their early performances were inspired by ambient and electronic artists of the 1970s and 1980s, most notably Brian Eno and Kraft¬werk.

Because of their "trippy" sound, The Orb developed a cult following among clubbers "coming down" from drug-induced highs. The band survived the 1990s and, slightly changing its style, has continued making records throughout the 2000s. Those nostalgic for the 1990s' chill outs might like The Orb's most recent record, The Dream, but most other people would not.
