The style eventually was marketed as neopop by their label, and this connected really good to the emergence of wave electro and electropop in the current 80’s revival. Various compilations were released with this kind of music, and Northern Lite became the true flag carrier of the German electropop who did manage to breakthrough to the mainstream via the techno underground. Their poppy electro with guitars has appealed to a wide audience since 2002, left mixed feelings with me myself until now but this hits the bull’s eye.
Northern Lite really surprise with “Unisex”, which is released by Universal, as this album has many good songs. They really finish off what a band such as Warren Suicide unfortunately did not. On “Unisex” many songs are good, but some stand out above the rest. Single ‘What You Want’, ‘I Don’t Remember’, ‘Out of My Head’, ‘Dancing With My Demons’ and especially ‘Cocaine’, a really explosive track, suitable for the dancefloor. Big beat techno and dragging electropop combine well here. Add an alternative indie-wave element and rock ’n roll and you’ll have Northern Lite. “Unisex” is a balanced mature album that you can play over and over and not get bored with.
