Chaos Restored With Justin Martin

[MIX ALBUM]

Artist: Justin Martin

Though many may know Justin Martin as one half the duo behind Dirtybird records (with man of the moment Claude Von Stroke), his history is a little less simple. While the settled San Fransiscan first met Crenshaw in 2003, a meeting of musical minds that, whilst assisting the creation of Intellect, bore the creation of their label, he`d already been signed to Ben Watt`s Buzzin` Fly that summer, and his first track, Sad Piano, formed the beginning of a lasting bond between Martin and the label that`s culminated in 2007`s Chaos Restored.

Part artist album, part San Fran-love in, the album draws in some of Martin`s latest efforts, as well as those of his hometown contemporaries - Tanner Ross, Kilowatts, Worthy and his own brother Christian - amidst a slew of Europe`s finest knob-twiddlers, all aligned to his own brand of off-kilter house music. The result is fifteeen tracks of utter joy, right across the house spectrum and beyond.

A deep start (Dan Drastic`s Somebody`s Touching Me floats into Martin`s own Nightowl, his latest single) soon picks up the pace, with the rave-tastic Ghetto Train, the segue a perfect comparison of the multi-faceted style of his own productions. One minute, subtle and smooth, the next, leaping around like a my-first-pill goon in waves of chemical joy. At once throwing away simple linear progression, there`s Tanner Ross and Killowatts` wonderfully jumpy Kruger Fingers, and the surging Jimpster mix of Motorcitysoul`s Aura. The sound positively refuses to stand still, but instead of a hotch-potch collection of tracks, it just seems to fall into place almost supernaturally.

The increasingly ubiquitous Shlomi Aber appears with the stuttering Freakside, and the sparse but head-shrinking Dopamine follows, never letting the listener settle, but pushing them on, rather than putting them off. All in all, it`s an album that feels upfront, but that doesn`t age with listening. A truly interesting and highly entertaining mix, and proof, if needed, that Martin is every bit as talented as his Dirtybird partner-in-crime.
