Label Bio - Lounge Records

Nobody really thought of the word "Lounge" when Pete Rivera opened his legendary club in the former cellar premises of the not less legendary "Mitternacht" venue deep in the heart of St. Pauli in the middle of the Nineties. Public reception did not relate the word to music or nightlife at all during that time. So Rivera thought straight, called his stylish nightbar Lounge and started an ambitious as well as colourful programme crossing all boundaries: International DJs were spinning quality music from Electro to Jazz, there were like-minded live bands playing, performances and readings happening. It was a logical step to think about putting a label together.

1996 was the year. Together with DJ colleague Mellow Lounge Records was introduced to the public. It was a matter of acting local and thinking global. The music for the label was produced by artists with a close relationship to the club, but with a worldwide distribution. Gator was the first act to gain nationwide respect, Lucky Loop is an artist of the first hour who is still producing for the label. This concept quickly made way for a more open way of thinking, Why being narrowminded when - as Mellow & Rivera were proving each weekend at that time in their DJ sets - you favour a broad musical spectrum ? "Music for modern living" was born. "Like traversing the globe in a hot air balloon," somebody in the British press wrote about the compilation series, which now has been running for ten years and accompanied modern bar and club life. Mellow & Rivera asked well-known artists from the scene for exclusive tracks, unleashed rare originals from the Sixties and Seventies (tracks by Tom Jones and Dusty Springfield were re-released in the vinyl series "MFML Classics") and were presenting an unpretentious mix of tunes to their worldwide audience.

"We are not here to offer a hip scene the latest hot shit. I am too slow myself to be aware of what is currently en vogue .... but when a production has depth and quality there is always space for it, be it on physical record, as a download, on the stage or in the box of a DJ - the possibilites are vast," says Mellow and looks forward to the next years with Lounge Records and MUTO.
