Label - Against The Grain

Label Bio - Against The Grain
“If you’re looking for a more robust version of breakbeat look no further than the twin towers of power, Brighton’s SuperCharged & Against The Grain”- Tayo, Muzik magazine.
SuperCharged and Against The Grain have grown from their midweek club night roots in Brighton to become two of the most respected breakbeat record labels in the world. They have built a solid reputation in the music industry for producing quality breaks from artists such as the Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Skool Of Thought, Disco Assassins, Splitloop and many more. From playing to 20,000 people at festivals in Spain to hitting number 2 in the Australian pop charts, their music has gained an audience spanning the world over.
In 1999 Lloyd Seymour a.k.a. Skool Of Thought teamed up with renowned Brighton beatmaster Martin Reeves aka Krafty Kuts to initiate a new weekly club night. They met in Martin’s record shop HVR, a key place for DJ’s, producers and promoters to drop in for a the down low on what’s happening in Brighton’s music scene. The pair immediately hit it off and soon hatched a plan to start a new weekly breaks event. As DJ’s, they both had already earned their stripes as accomplished crowd rockers so with the dynamic duo as residents, ‘SuperCharged’ rapidly established itself as one of the UK’s leading breaks nights. Today SuperCharged is world renowned and the guest spinners at the club read like a who’s who of the breakbeat scene, with the likes of the Stanton Warriors, Freq Nasty and Adam Freeland all rating it as one of the top gigs in the country.
From this success, the two record labels emerged. Both SuperCharged and Against The Grain immediately gathered high profile support with their early releases with DJ’s as diverse as Roni Size and Seb Fontaine embracing their uncompromising sound. Their music was rarely off the top spot in DJ magazines beats and breaks chart then SuperCharged picked up ‘best new label’ and the 2003 breakspoll awards along with ‘best new act’ for Raw As F**K and ‘best remix’ and ‘face of breakbeat’ for Krafty Kuts. The labels went onto sign the mighty Freestylers and released their third album in the summer of 2004 to critical acclaim. Push Up, the stand out single from the album went top 10 in 5 countries across the world, most notably Australia where it went to number two and picked up a gold disc. Not bad for a label with such humble roots! At present new albums from Krafty Kuts, Splitloop and Skool Of Thought have all further established the labels as key on the scene.
Whilst sections of the press may argue that dance music is in decline, the unpretentious party atmosphere of SuperCharged and Against The Grain is winning new converts week by week. The beats, breaks and basslines they champion are constantly gaining wider exposure, without the need for media hype and at the forefront of the emerging global breaks scene, SuperCharged and Against The Grain continue to forge new ground and new sounds…
