Richard Dinsdale works that euphoric rush to perfection…

Posted by Juliet

”It’s all too easy to endlessly list Richard Dinsdale’s accomplishments…It’s all too easy to wax lyrical about his Ministry Of Sound residency, his genre bending productions or his rapid rise to the top of house music’s well spread table. But where’s the fun in that? Of course Richard’s one of the UK house music’s recent heroes. You wouldn’t be reading this if he wasn’t. What you need to know is why he is where he is. And why this time next year he’ll be even further.”

Since the release of Dinsdale’s own Toolroom Knights volume, remixes for the likes of Lot49 and Renaissance and Global Underground, Richard now returns to his well polished platform of all things deep and driving, this time delivering the masterpiece that is U-Turn. The album recieved rave reviews across all media and has been featured in many different charts.

Following this, Richard’s forthcoming releases will be ‘ReWired & Remixed’ package of his electro hit ‘She Wants Me’, (due for full release on 2nd February 2009.) on Spin Out Records. In March you can expect to see a 3 track EP from Richard Dinsdale with some of his finest work to date, with a remix package to follow shortly after. Apparently he won’t be stopping anytime soon, if you are in London you can also catch him behind the decks on friday, February 6 @ Inigo bar (For more info Click here) But before that here we’ve caught up with the man of the moment!

What have been up to lately and what can we expect from you over the next couple of months?
I have been working flat out in the studio working on solo projects plus collaborations with Michael Gray, D-Unity & Paul Thomas. My artist album is out now on Toolroom Records. I have just finished a collaboration album with Michael Gray, which is a little different to what I normally produce but still contains some dance records. My latest tune is out now on Global Underground called “Walkies” which is also out on Clubbers guide 2009. Apart from making an e.p. With D-Unity I just finished an e.p. with Paul Thomas.

Which one do you enjoy the most, Djing or producing?
I enjoy both as much as each other. I love producing new records all the time but the real excitement is testing them out in a club and seeing how the crowd react to them.

What do you see as your main strengths as a producer?
I like to think I have a long musical background so I try to apply that to my music. Each time I make a record I take a long time in getting the beats right.

What can people expect from your live show?
I like to hope my passion in music comes out in my sets. I try to play the best of most genres playing everything from Techno to House. Each time I play a set at a club I give it my all from start to finish making sure each track blends in with on another.

What’s the key to getting noticed?

Just keep believing in what you do and never give up because one day you will meet the right person, which will then lead you on to other things. There will be times when you feel down but trust me if you really have a passion for this industry and want to work in it then don’t give up.

When and where was your best gig?

Apart from being resident at Ministry Of Sound I just recently played at Summadayze in Australia and I would have to say that was one of the best gigs I have done. Very professionally run and the crowd were just great.

Who is your all time musical hero?
Too many to name but Quincy Jones is one of my all time favourite producers. His production is just out of this world and very clever.

What’s the first record you bought?

Michael Jackson Thriller

What’s more important. The mix or the next tune?
The next tune.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope I’m still producing records but I would like to start my own night

What do you think about dj mag’s top100 poll?
I think it’s a great idea. Would be nice to get in it

Do you think the club scene is a closed shop with regard to new DJs getting heard?

No not really. To be a dj these days you have to produce music as well so if you make a successful tune/s then you wont have any problem getting into the dj scene. Promoters love new talent and love to give them a try.

Is there an all-time favourite track you wish you’d produced?
Metallica “Nothing else matters” or Bruce Sprinsteen “streets of philadelphia”

Do you sample, use old records, listen to them, or how does your producing process go?
Depends what kind of tune I’m going to make but yes I do sample or get ideas from old 70’s records for their hooks.

Which is more appealing to you while djing - to dig out a relatively old track, or play the newest release?
Probably to dig out an old track because you have the chance to play that classic that you couldn’t back in the day due to the fact you were not a dj. I remember going to clubs years ago and wanting to play that cool tune the main dj was playing and getting that buzz and respect from the crowd.

What is the most interesting comment you have heard about your music?
Fatboy Slim commenting on my tunes, he doesn’t normally do that

Is there something that you don’t like about this scene or things that pissed you off along the way?
Yeah a certain dj getting too big for his own shoes due to the plain and simple fact a download website made that Dj.

Who’s been your favourite musician or producer that you have worked with over the years?
I’m working with one of them at the moment and that’s Michael Gray. He is one of the most nicest guys you will meet on the scene and very talented.

What is the magic hangover cure?
A shower and a nap in the afternoon after some food.

Was there a moment when you knew you wanted to make music your life?
Yes when I turned about 13 years old and my brothers introduced me to this type of music. They would also come home and tell me about there great nights at Club U.K.

Where’s your favourite place to play?
I love Sankeys and Ministry Of Sound.

How do you handle obsessive groupies? (The hot ones)
Tell them to do one.

Then how do you handle obsessive groupies? (The ugly ones)
Tell them they are too hot for me.

And then how do you handle obsessive groupies? (The guys)
Give them to Mark Knight hahaha

What’s your best tip for getting money out of dodgy promoters?
If at the club I’ll send my driver over. If you don’t receive money during the week when you are supposed to just get my lawyer on to it.

What do you think about this whole minimal craze and do you support that?
I play some Minimal very rarely but I’m not made on the whole concept.

What’s good about the UK?
