The Bulgarian is all about Persistence & Fidget !

Posted by Juliet

The Bulgarian aka Mr. Elastik - is actually Bulgarian but living in Cape Town - he first blasted onto the scene in December of 2006 with his much acclaimed Loop Poop EP as one of the pioneers of the then still emerging Fidget House sound.

He has spent most of 2007 blowing up all over the world producing over 20 tracks and remixes in that short space of time and still managing to do well under his Techno/Electro guise as Mr.Elastik. 2008 Seems to be carrying on with that momentum, with some big name remixes and releases (such as Larry Tee’s next single “I love u” and an official remix of Human Resources’ 1991 Classic “Dominator”) on the way and the birth of Feta Recordings, his collaborative effort with long time breakbeat veteran Vlad Sokolov.

What’s the first record you bought?
Err… it was some strange one-off obscure breakbeat record with some The Matrix samples in it and a super crunchy low-fi bassline, it was amazing but I don’t remember who did it and it definitely was not a good seller.

What have been up to lately and what can we expect from you over the next couple of months?
Wow, I’ve been really busy since the start of the summer, I’ve been doing remixes up the wazoo. Got remixes for Dopamine on Title Fight coming, also for Jaimie Fanatic, the Urban Moneys mix that came out recently and is sitting high up in the djdownload top 100 and also a remix for Human Resouce’s 1991 classic raver “Dominator” and one for AC Slater still due.
Also did a remix for Larry Tee a while back for his next single, ‘I Love You’, which should be out soon hopefully, and I’ve just finished a remix for Si Begg too which I’m excited about.

Then there’s the new Potty Mouth EP “Air Bounce” with a remix by Nick Supply, and also an EP on Complot in Canada on the way.
There’s even more than that though… just keep an eye on my myspace page for more info!

Which one do you enjoy the most, Djing or producing?
Completely different experiences! I’d hate to have to choose between them! The energy of playing in front of a crowd of crazy bouncing people is insane but the satisfaction and pride that you get from creating something in the studio in a slower and more reasoned process that lasts and has recursive effects is also amazing.

What’s the key to getting noticed?
Persistence Persistence Persistence!

Who is your all time musical hero?

Trent Reznor – Nine Inch Nails, the man who showed me that you can do it all yourself and be good at it!

What makes a party good & bad?
The Vibe, the “x factor” of clubbing, its that thing that everyone knows how to recognise but is hard to calculate or measure or even define. What makes a good vibe? Everything combined I suppose, from the right venue to the right dj to the right crowd to the right poster to the right price of a beer!

What’s your current take on the dance scene?
It’s healthier than it’s been in years in my opinion, at least from a consumer point of view, the technology for creating our music is becoming more accessible and easier to use and you’re suddenly getting 17 year olds making hit records -watch your toes big boys, the young ones are coming!. The range of sounds and fresh ideas available out there is incredible at the moment. You just have to want to find it!

What’s the biggest crowd you’ve played to?
4500, Piknic Festival in Montreal Canada this year, Complot party. Josh Wink had played the festival the weekend before and set a record of 5000 so I’m quite pleased with the 4500 turnout for my gig with MOSSA and Luke Solomon.

Is a DJ a star today? Or does he have to be more than just a DJ? What do you think of the superstar DJ phenomenon?
To be honest I don’t get it. DJing is not that hard. The technical side is easier to learn than any instrument but that’s not what makes a good DJ. Neither are gimmicks like basting horns and setting your decks on fire, they get old quickly. Its all about making people dance and forget their daily woes for a few hours. While that’s admittedly a skill that not everyone can possess I cannot fathom how a mega DJ can charge like $80 000 for 3hrs work playing other people’s work for which they’re lucky to get $500 for in total if that much. Something is not right with the system there.

Do you think the club scene is a closed shop with regard to new DJs getting heard?
No but it is a lot harder to break through than it used to be. Unless you have another talent, e.g. producing or have more contacts than Jesus you’ll not find it an easy going.

Is there a different reaction in clubs from different countries across the globe?
Absolutely, no two places are the same! Different people and different environments make every place unique in some way. Whats amazing is we all speak the same language: we all like to party!

Do you have a favourite place or somewhere where you get the best reaction?
Yes for a favourite place: Tokyo! Even though I’ve never been there! The Japanese have such an interesting and alien culture, I just have to make my way there at some point. Konichiwa!

What’s your best tip for getting money out of dodgy promoters?
I’m too much of a nice guy and too trusting, if anyone actually has some tips for me that would be awesome. Drop me a msg on my myspace.

How would you want to die?
In space, exploring alien worlds and the far reaches of our galaxy at least if not the universe!

What attracts you most?
New knowledge and discovery!

What was your worst ever job?
Assistant for a small caterer… man, never going near the food industry again! And I always tip waiters/waitresses at least 10% since I worked at a fish and chips shop in Cape Town when I was 16!

If you could pick anyone dead or alive to have lunch with, who would it be?
Nicola Tesla, the man was 100 years before his time! So unfortunate, the things he could have achieved had he been born only 50 years later!

Can you cook? If so - what?
Hell yes! I love cooking, it goes hand in hand with being creative I guess. When I was little and they used to ask in school what do you wanna be when you grow up and everyone gave the usual, fireman, princess or president response I would say I want to be a chef (not any more though – terrible high stress profession that)! I cook lots of things, I’m experimental in the kitchen too, not Justin my beats.

When was the last time you got so drunk you threw up?
Haha, I never throw up from alcohol. Believe me I’ve tried, but no go. I envy people who just throw up and feel better immediately.
