Hyperion - On The Expressway [U&A Recordings]

Hyperion

I’ve been waiting for this one. I interviewed Hyperion about a week or two ago and it was fantastic. The guys are truly down to earth and their productions (and future productions) have an insane amount of substance about them. Just wait for their remix of Elite Force’s ‘Peyote Road’ due out soon. It made my nipples go hard. Seriously.

BUT, we’re talking about their U&A Recordings debut ‘On The Expressway’. Which to be honest is my favourite release thus far into 2008.

The Original mix of ‘Expressway’ is an epic driving breaks track that continues to throw elements at you rather than take them away. The length of the track is perfect, the kicks are chosen and suit the vocals and driving vibe of the overall track superbly. At the interview last week, the boys mentioned that one of their influences is The Crystal Method’s ‘Keep Hope Alive’ and from listening to this baby that influence seeps in to great effect.

4 minutes in and the track drops into a hand raising atmospheric wonderland, glittered with the electro backing that supports the track, one minute after the kicks multiply before they let everything go and the track subtley pulls the elements away.

Next up is Zodiac Cartel, whom mixes things up from the Original and the General Midi Remix with a techy, minimal rerub. Utilising the one of the main synths from the original, The Cartel creates a wonderous deep retake of Hyperion’s original. It’s not something you would expect from Zodiac Cartel but it certainly is easy to pick him (or her, I STILL haven’t been able to figure out who they are) with all the usual tweaks you would expect the Cartel to use. It’s deep, atmospheric and kinda wonky.

Finally, General Midi returns to the plate with arguably the best remix of 2008. Actually, it is my favourite remix of 2008 so far. From the get go and you know it’s going to be huge. Although the remix manages to keep you wondering how big. Midi’s usual massive kicks and funked up electro synths are all here but 10 times bigger. 2 minutes in, Midi swings the synths left and right and pulls out some truly spine-tingling beat smashing, which (thankfully) are littered throughout the remix but are glitched up so you just can’t expect it. The mid-breakdown is a glitched out, big beat godzilla before leading the track out with (another!) beat smash.

Absolutely wicked release. My favourite of 2008 so far.
