Richie Hawtin @ Grande Halle de La Villette - Playlist
Richie Hawtin and Native Instruments have created a custom version of the Traktor Pro software that comes with a background application which enables real time broadcasting of the track names of music played – in this case hooked up to Hawtin’s Twitter feed. This means that you can see what he’s playing as he plays it – or find that niggling tune that you can’t get out of your head the next day.
Not only that, but it will be a great tool for small labels and upcoming artists to get their names and tracks known – excellent promotion basically. In addition, it will also mean that royalty collecting societies will have to start making note of tracks played by DJs, and make sure they get paid accordingly, as they explain:
“By providing the necessary information to track what is really being played in clubs, the Twitter DJ application would not only drag the likes of GEMA, PRS and SOCAN kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but make sure the real artists get paid instead of performance payments simply being carved up between the Madonnas and U2s of the world. If record sales are slowing down and performance is now the key area where artists can achieve financial stability, better solutions need to be found and a workable structure put in place as soon as possible. We hope that our Twitter DJ application is a step forward in the development of these types of systems“
Richie began testing of the application last night at The WATT in Rotterdamm... And here we've compiled a playlist from his gig @Grande Halle de La Villette, Paris...
